Barcelona-Madrid High Speed Train (AVE)

The Madrid-Zaragoza-Barcelona High Speed Train line was inaugurated on 20 February 2008, after parts of the line had operated since 2003 (Madrid–Zaragoza–Lleida) and 2006 (Lleida–Tarragona). Seventeen trains run now every day between 6:00 and 21:00 hrs. This line is currently one of the world's fastest long-distance trains in commercial operation, with non stop trains covering the 621 km (386 mi) between the two cities in just 2 hours 38 minutes, and those stopping at all stations in 3 hours 23 minutes.
The AVE (high speed) train service between Madrid and Barcelona travel time is only 2 and 3/4 hours for the direct trains. When you figure in the 1 or more hours in advance that you need to be at the airport, the total time is quite comparable. Standard price for tourist class ranges from 110.30 to 130.20 euros. However, there are numerous discount fares available, including a web-fare for as low as 41.50 euros.
The AVE is a high-speed train connecting cities in Spain, so that travelers can experience all that the illustrious region has to offer. Plan on breathing the fresh air of Madrid, Seville, Malaga and Barcelona—the train’s four major destinations—as you coast from city to city inside one of the window-lined, high-tech cars of the AVE.
Known for its speed, reasonable fares and flexible schedules, the AVE remains the ideal form of transportation for savvy travelers looking for an unparalleled Spanish experience. Take advantage of the rail and design a trip that takes you from the breathtaking monuments of Madrid to the art and design of Barcelona and the fine cuisine in Seville.
Ticket control and passport checks will occur at the station before boarding the AVE train. Gate closes 2 minutes prior to the trains’ departure time.
