Following London and Stockholm, International Management Company IMG is launching Barcelona Triathlon in collaboration with the Catalan Triathlon Federation and Catalunya Swimming Club. Barcelona Triathlon, which takes place on the 5th October, will become part of the Euro cities-Tri series along with London and Stockholm. IMG hopes to include more cities in the Tri series, as it develops new events across Europe.
Barcelona wants to experience a similar growth to that of the London Triathlon, which now has over 13,000 competitors. Barcelona has a strong sports tradition, following the Olympic Games in 1992, and Barcelona has now developed in to a ‘health and fitness’ city, with high participation levels across a number of major sports events that take place annually. IMG, a leading worldwide sports, media and entertainment company has tremendous experience of mass participation events, such as The Melbourne Marathon, The London Triathlon, Tour de Suisse and many others. IMG Spain also organises Barcelona Tennis Open (Conde de Godó), and the Barcelona Turbo Tennis Tournament.
One of the strengths of the Barcelona Triathlon is the Race Route. Competitors will have the chance to run or bike through the city and will see several famous landmarks, such as Agbar Tower, Triumph Arch, Columbus statue, Ciudadella Park, Mapfre Towers, Diagonal Mar, and Barceloneta.
The event will have a great national TV coverage through TV3 and Canal Plus and also international coverage on SNTV platform (reaching more than 150 countries) and through Transworldsport Program.
Barcelona Triathlon will be the only Triathlon in city that combines olympic, sprint, and supersprint distances. It will also accept team relays (one swim, one bike, one runs) in order to make things more attainable for novices. It will also host a Tri-Corporate category for an inter-companies competition.
Barcelona Triathlon hopes to attract some national and international elite athletes, celebrities and novices alike. For the first year, IMG expects around 2,000 competitors split across all distances. Registration will be exclusively through the official event
